Opera Diponegoro. This weekend I had the amazing opportunity to watch a truly inspiring theatrical performance at the Jakarta Theatre- Taman Ismail Marzuki. The play titled ” Java War- Opera Diponegoro” directed by Sardono W Kusumo. Is an artistic and creative interpretation if the 19th Century conflict known as the “Java War” and the Indonesian prince, Pangeran Dipo Negoro that lead a independence rebellion against the Dutch Colonists. Centered around a backdrop of a painting by Raden Saleh painted in 1857 the story of Diponegro is told through a series of temporary dances and narrated through song. The experience was totally memorizing. Perfectly choreographed symmetry. Layers and layers of symbolism through movement. Inspiring. Proud of our Indonesian Heritage.
Leading Lady, Happy Salma, wears Tulola’s Garden Paradise Earrings during her performance.
